Remedial Massage: More Than Just Rest and Relaxation

It’s finally the weekend.  The long week at work is over and you’re looking for some rest and relaxation.  For many of us, the answer to our sore muscles and tired minds is a massage.  But did you know that there are more benefits to a massage that goes beyond rest and relaxation?

What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is defined as “the systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to assist in rehabilitation, pain and injury management”.  It is used to help restore the body’s optimal health after an injury, manage pain and assist in rehabilitation.

Remedial massage is designed to balance muscles and soft tissue length, tension and tone which then aid in returning the joint and bone to their normal position.  It also encourages healthy blood flow especially in the injured areas, which then helps in removing blockages, damaged cells, scar tissues and adhesions from an injury.  The result in patients is improved circulation, increased mobility and reduced pain, which brings a sense of general well-being.

Remedial Massage vs. Relaxation Massage: How are they different?

The main difference between remedial massage and any other form of relaxation massage is that remedial massage involves both assessment and treatment.  A remedial therapist will perform physical assessments including range of motion testing, functional muscle testing and special orthopaedic tests.  The therapist will then tailor a treatment plan that is best suited to the patient’s condition.

For a long time, remedial massage was often thought as being synonymous to deep tissue massage.  However, deep tissue massage is simply a technique which may be incorporated in a patient’s remedial massage treatment plan, along with several other techniques.

How do you benefit from Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is known to provide relief for many health conditions including insomnia, headache, chronic pain, depression and anxiety, back pain, arthritis, high blood pressure, constipation, sciatica, carpal tunnel, and sports injuries.

Along with helping treat health conditions or correcting problems in the body, remedial massage offers many benefits including:

Stress relief – The techniques used in remedial massage encourages the release of endorphins, also known as the “feel-good” hormones, while reducing the stress hormones norepinephrine, adrenaline and cortisol.  This results in calm and relaxation.  Remedial massage is often recommended in stress and anxiety treatment programs as it can effectively lessen both physical and emotional stress.

An enhanced immune system – Remedial massage can improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, which give the immune system a boost.  Plus, with the decreased stress hormones, the immune system can work more efficiently in protecting the body.

Muscle tension release and pain relief – Remedial massage can help release trigger points, stretch and elongate muscles and break down adhesions.  This assists in increasing blood flow to the tissues and releasing tension, which in turn relieves pain from the injured area.

Improved mobility – The range of motion around the joint can be enhanced when muscle tension is released, thus enabling joints to move more comfortably.

Improved posture – Remedial massage can lengthen the muscles and promote balance in the body, which leads to an improved postural alignment.  This is particularly helpful to those who work in front of a computer the entire day as they are prone to neck, shoulder and lower back pain.

Healthy and toned skin – Remedial massage can help increase the circulation in and under the skin, which promotes healthy cell regeneration. It also encourages sebum production, which makes the skin soft and supple.
