There are so many different food and environmental intolerances and sensitivities that affect us these days. Hopefully you are one of the lucky ones and you are not affected by any of them! But how much do you know about these and what it means for the people living with them? We think it’s important for everyone to be educated even just a small amount. So here is some information on a few things that can cause people A LOT of discomfort.

Lactose Intolerance

Lactose is a sugar found in the milk of mammals. We as humans produce an enzyme called Lactase which is produced in the small intestine to break down lactose into galatose and glucose which is then absorbed into the blood stream. People with a lactose intolerance are usually lacking or not producing enough of the Lactase enzyme. This means the body cannot break down the Lactose into a simpler form for the body to absorb. People with a lactose Intolerance typically experience bloating, flatulence and diarrhea. Abdominal cramps are also a fairly common experience with lactose intolerance. Therefore people with this type of intolerance generally avoid milk and other dairy products to avoid these symptoms.

Gluten Intolerance

A gluten intolerance generally describes a non-coeliac Gluten sensitivity. Gluten is a protein found in some grains such as Wheat, Rye, Oats and Barley. This protein is often used in many products to help bind ingredients together and those with Coeliac Disease or a gluten intolerance learn very quickly to decipher those strange number and letter combinations on ingredients lists. Like those with a lactose intolerance, people with a gluten intolerance often experience flatulence, bloating, abdominal cramps as well as “brain fog”, extreme tiredness, headaches, flu-like symptoms and/or joint pain. Yeast Intolerance

A yeast intolerance is an inflammatory response to yeast proteins that are present in many foods and drinks. As you may know, yeast is a living fungus, it is often used in foods like baked goods to make them rise, and alcohol in which it is used to help the fermenting process. People with this type of intolerance usually need to avoid other foods as well, including blue cheese, mushrooms, malt and truffles. Sugar and sugary foods also need to be avoided often as fungus inside the body will feed off the sugar.

Environmental Intolerance

Environmental intolerance covers a HUGE range of things. From the typical pollen, animal hair and dust to electronic devices and chemicals. We are all familiar with “Hayfever” and if you don’t happen to suffer yourself, chances are you know many people who do. What you might not realise is that the intolerance might not be the dust or the pollen or the dog, but something else in your life.
