Candida Albicans is the name of yeast. Friendly and unfriendly bacteria live everywhere, including in our bodies. Our intestines are full of friendly bacteria that work for us. There is also some yeast present in our intestines. It does not seem to have any beneficial function in our bodies nor does it do any harm if it is in small amounts. The good bacteria keep the yeast from growing into large colonies that could cause problems!

Antibiotics kill bacteria whether good or bad, but not yeast. For example Candida Albicans. When taken over a long period of time, the friendly bacteria in the intestines are killed, allowing the yeast to grow freely. The yeast then releases toxins into the blood stream causing a whole host of symptoms.

Some symptoms caused by Candida include:

  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Fatigue
  • Digestive disturbances, such as Indigestion, Bloating, Constipation and Diarrhea
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Loss of concentration
  • Poor memory
  • Sensitivity to perfumes, fumes, chemical odours and tobacco smoke
  • Recurring infections
  • Painful joints
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Eczema
  • Acne
  • Menstrual problems
  • Sugar cravings
  • Sleepy mid afternoon
  • Skin rashes
  • Cystitis
  • Allergic reactions

There are many factors that may assist in Candida overgrowth. Such causes may be: Excessive ingestion of sugar and refined white flour products, excessive consumption of antibiotics, Immune suppression drugs, such as corticosteroids and cytotoxic drugs (chemotherapy), and increased levels of female hormones, as in pregnancy, the pill and hormone replacement therapy. Stress is also a major contributing factor to yeast overgrowth.

The treatment of Candida involves four steps:

  • Go on a yeast free diet
  • Eliminate all sugars and white flour
  • Reduce the amount of yeast in the bowel
  • Replace the good bacteria
